So, at Phillipoe (Phillipoi, etc.), there was another quasi-ancient Greek site, which still had a functioning ampitheatre, albeit one which had been augmented over the intervening centuries by the occupying people (the Romans added places to keep animals when bloodsport took over from theatre). The rest of the ruins had been repurposed into several basilicae, basilicas? They were identified as A, B, and C for clarity.
These are beautiful ruins--Level 5! the stuff of "ruin porn"--but as they were entirely Christian, we were completely not interested.
And the obligatory museum on site had these scintillating displays (see example):
Note anything wrong with the picture? Numbers, but no display card, perhaps??? I mean, #1 looks interesting, and I might even buy it for a function, but I have no idea what it is or what culture created it! From what we learned in the antagonist museum in Avidera, it was probably a funereal headpiece, but I can be creative with gold jewelry. Needless to say, with the rest of the exhibits like this, we left pretty quickly.
Which left us with one other activity on site... Just how many steps is it to the top of a mountain???
