Building to last

There is a project to build a clock that will last 10,000 years, a span longer than humans can easily conceive.  Visiting ancient monuments in Greece brings this point home, especially in the North of Greece where sandstone was used extensively, along with granite and marble.   Note what happens to sandstone after a mere 2500 years:
You may need to zoom in a bit, or just check out this next shot, which looks like H.R. Giger was somehow involved in making this particular stretch of wall.
Now, if you want things to last, I recommend marble or granite.  It also comes in convenient non-slip varieties, if you let your architect know that's what you're looking for.
