While visiting the Athens Archaeological Museum yesterday (more about this later), we happened across a small display of decorated ostrich eggs. Apparently, these were highly prized at one point; the Greeks obtained them via trade with Egypt and then artisans would decorate them. (This is still going on today, in fact.) Apparently, this became so desirable that artists started making faux ostrich eggs to meet demand. However, the difference is pretty clear:
I said to Lauren - "you can just imagine the scene. He's telling her, 'Honey, it IS a real egg, honest, just like I promised I'd get for you,' and she's saying 'it's a fake, it's too small to be real.'"
Without a moment's hesitation, Lauren quipped back, "He'd say, 'It's from a baby ostrich.'"
I discovered that laughing out loud in a Greek museum will have the docents staring at you...
HAHAHA!!! Very funny!
