At the end of each trip, when we return the rental car, we do a cost analysis of kilometers driven and liters of petrol consumed.
Upon returning the car at the port in Heraklion, Crete, we had driven 1362 km or 851.25 miles, which is the about the same as driving round trip from Boston to DC. We used 93.5 L or 24.7 gallons spending 176 euros ($190). This is over 6.5 days of travel from one end of the island (Falassarna) to the other (Zakros), from elevations at sea level to 1025m to find a cave, constantly winding in and out of mountain passes. It was exhausting, relentless, amazing, invigorating, and unfinished.
I had identified 24 places to visit (22 archaeological sites and 2 caves). We saw 14 archaeological sites, may of which had multiple subparts located in different areas making the trip into a scavenger hunt of sorts. We also visited one cave, and we'll say two gorges, as well as the fortuitous finds of the honey farm and the winery.
There is still more to see!
